How we met- Her side 1

My side of the story isn’t nearly as sweet as Bobby’s, but my side did start long before his…

As I was getting ready to go to college,  my mom sat me down. She talked to me about how important it was to do good in classes at college and to learn about myself, but she also told me how important it was for me to find a mate. I distinctly remember this conversation because she used the word mate, and I failed to keep a straight face. Anyway, I digress. She brought up the important point of my potential field: education, not a great male to female ratio. Once I left college, it would be harder to me to find eligible men to date, and my mom knew that getting married and having a family was important to me.  Her advice was simple, I could do dance and whatever else I wanted, but I should make an effort to join at least one male-dominated club.

Fast forward to club fair; after going straight to the dance club booth, I started to look for clubs that would attract a certain type. Little nerdy, unique, and male. I knew that I had found my club when I saw Historic Swordsmanship.

I met Bobby within the first week of clubs, and you know what they say, Mom always knows best!

How we met – His Side

I remember her skipping into my life on a late summer afternoon at the very start of my sophomore year of college. I thought she was this shimmering beacon, this beautiful person full of energy dancing around the field and I can’t tell you the butterflies I felt when she came over.

A little context: I had just finished rock climbing with Patrick Streifel when we stepped out into the sun to see the Historic Swordsmanship Club practicing. Being sufficiently nerdy and a fencer with a year of experience, I pounced on the opportunity. Little did I know how big of a turn in my life was about to take.

As I said before, Kate was radiant on that field. As a star and a beacon, she has never dimmed. On that day, I remember seeing her out of the corner of my eye. The way she brought joy and warmth everywhere she went filled me with curiosity I couldn’t get out of my system. I just wanted to get to know her, to bask in the warm glow she exuded.

I was also really shy. Something about Kate gave me crazy butterflies. Eventually she did come over and to my amazement, I found myself talking like crazy. Now I can be a shy person and I was definitely nervous around Kate, but the words still flowed. We had so much to talk about right from the start and a little part of me just needed to know more. To experience more.

After three and a half years, that little seed has grown into a beautiful relationship that is the anchor in my life. Kate has brought the same joy and light everywhere and I couldn’t be more thankful God brought her into my life.
